During Dwapara Yuga, Arjuna did tapas to defeat Karna on the advice of Lord Sree Krishna by attaing pashupathastra from Lord Mahadeva. Lord Mahadeva & Goddess Parvathi, disguised as forest dwellers troubled Arjuna to test the depth of Arjuna's bakthi. Not knowing true identity of the Lord, Arjuna attacked with his Gandeevam. Seething with anger the Lord Mahadeva's breath grew in intensity, lifting Arjuna off the ground.
Arjuna begged Sree Krishna for help. Lord Mahavishnu appeared, with a massive 18 Yojanas in height. Lord Mahavishnu calmed down Lord Mahadeva, who then blessed Arjuna with Pashupathastra. From then on, both the Lords are blessing this holy place with their graceful presence.
